Three SJU wrestlers advanced to the NCAA Championships after competing at the Great Lakes Regional on Saturday, Feb. 21, at Concordia in Mequon, Wis.
Sophomore Dan Fiecke, Winsted, won the 197-pound weight class for the second straight season, while senior Matt Vos, Arlington, at 125 pounds and junior Nate Lefebvre, Elk River, at 133 pounds each advanced to the finals and were picked as wild card selections for nationals.
SJU placed third with 103 team points, behind only Augsburg with 179.5 team points and Augustana, Ill. with 118 team points.
Fiecke pinned Tim Struska of Maranatha in 48 seconds in his first match, then pinned Justin Ruggio of North Central in 4:31 in his second match of the day. Fiecke then defeated Aaron Granell of Augustana 3-2 in double overtime in the semifinals and Joe Cullen of Augsburg 4-1 for the finals. Fiecke is 33-9 on the season.
Vos, still recovering from a broken left hand, injury-defaulted to Matt Shankey of Augsburg in the finals at 125 pounds.
Lefebvre lost 10-2 to Mark Matzek of Augsburg in the finals at 133 pounds.
Freshman Jacob Malone, New York Mills, went 4-1 to finish third at 157 pounds. The four wins gave him 33 on the season, which is a school record for a freshman.
The NCAA Championships will be held on Friday and Saturday, March 5 and 6, in Dubuque, Iowa.
