Three SJU wrestlers competed at the NCAA Championships on Friday and Saturday, March 5 and 6, in Dubuque, Iowa. Sophomore Dan Fiecke, Winsted, competed at 197-pounds for the second straight season, while senior Matt Vos, Arlington, competed at 125 pounds and junior Nate Lefebvre, Elk River, competed at 133 pounds. As a team, SJU finished in 27th place at the NCAA Championships.
Fiecke lost his first match to top seed Akeem Carter of Wartburg, but then rallied to pin Ben Stum of Baptist Bible College in 4:31 and won a 7-2 decision over Tom Medonis of Springfield. Fieke went on to finish fifth to earn All-America honors. Fieke beat sixth-seeded Joe Cullen of Augsburg 4-2, then lost to fifth-seeded Andrew Helms of Delaware Valley, 12-8. In the fifth-place match, Fieke beat Wyatt Reyerson of Luther, 7-3. Fieke finishes the season with a 42-12 record.
Vos, who was the fourth seeded wrestler at 125 pounds but has a broken left hand, lost 3-2 to Terry Morgan of Loras in his first match. Vos then lost 8-5 to Ty Klofta of Ohio Northern and was eliminated.
Lefebvre lost his first match at 133 pounds, 15-6, to number one seed Ozzie Saxson of Wartburg. Lefebvre then lost 14-2 to Tim Lennox in the consolation round.
Three SJU wrestlers made the 2004 Scholar All-American team - Vos at 125 pounds, sophomore Charlie Sadder, Shoreview, at 141 pounds and sophomore Dan Willaert, North Mankato, at 184 pounds.
