Mavericks ink two wrestlers
April 15, 2004
Mankato, Minn.-- Minnesota State head coach Jim Makovsky has announced the signing of two wrestlers to National Letters of Intent to join the Maverick program for the upcoming 2004-05 season. Adam Delander and Shane Johnson are both expected to compete at the lighter weights for MSU.
"One of the most immediate needs for our program is finding quality lightweights. Shane and Adam are two high quality wrestlers who have the ability to make an immediate impact on our program," said Makovsky. "As of today, our lineup for next season has greatly improved."
A Roberts, Wis., native, Delander was a three-time state placewinner while competing for St. Croix Central High School. He won a Wisconsin state title as a sophomore and placed third as a junior. Delander regained his championship form as a senior, taking the title once again and capping his Panther career with a superb 144-14 mark. He is expected to step in for Minnesota State at the 125-pound weight class.
"Adam has had a lot of success and has an unbelieveable amount of energy," Makovsky stated. "His attitude and work ethic are going to be a good fit for us."
Hailing from St. James, Minn., Johnson compiled an overall record of 127-28 for the Saints. As a 125-pound senior, he racked up a 42-1 record en route to a third-place finish at the Minnesota state tournament, falling 3-2 in the semifinals to the eventual champion. He is projected to compete at either 125 or 133 pounds for the Mavericks.
"Shane comes from a great high school program and knows what it takes to be successful. He is very talented and the area wrestling fans know what a great kid he is," said Makovsky. "He is familiar with our program and will have no problem making the transition to the college setting."
Minnesota State, hosts of the 2004 NCAA Division II National Championships, finished 17th at the tournament and had three All-Americans. All signings are contingent upon admission at MSU and compliance with NCAA rules, including certification with the NCAA Clearinghouse.
