Nesseth signs with Augustana

April 29, 2004

Mike Long of Parkston, S.D., and Tom Nesseth of Lakefield, Minn., have signed national letters of intent to attend Augustana College and wrestle for the Vikings, Augustana head coach Jason Reitmeier announced today.

Long posted a 49-1 record as a senior at Parkston High School. He won the 140-pound state title and helped the Trojans win its second straight Class B state dual championship as well as the Class B state team title. He was a finalist for the Mitchell Daily Republic Wrestler of the Year Award.

Nesseth was a four-year starter and two-time state qualifier at Jackson County Central High School. He posted a 41-2 record as a senior and won the 189-pound Minnesota Class AA state title. A three-time All Southwest Conference performer, he won the 189-pound conference championship in 2004. As a junior, Nesseth had a record of 23-10 and placed fourth at the state championships.

"Mike and Tom bring a lot of experience and success to Augustana College," Reitmeier said. "Mike is looking to grab a starting spot next year at 133 pounds. He is great on the mat using a variety of turns, and he has improved on his feet. Tom is a very intense and physical wrestler who will adapt to the college style very quickly. He will battle for a spot at the 184 and 197 pound weight classes. We are extremely happy with the addition of these two student-athletes."

Long and Neeseth join a recruiting class that includes Brandon Krueger of Ames, Neb., Adam Schlee of Grand Meadow, Minn., Nathan Buys of Hull, Iowa, Mitch Lunning of LeRoy, Minn., Joe Walloch of Lesterville, S.D., and Jordan Burmeister of Lakefield, Minn.

The Vikings return all 10 starters, including five national qualifiers, four All-Americans and one national champion, from this past year's team that placed sixth at the NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships.
