Grasser brings 2004-05 wrestling class to six

May 5, 2004

Mankato, Minn.-- With the signing of another state champion, Minnesota State head wrestling coach Jim Makovsky increased his recruiting class to six. LeCenter High School senior Joey Grasser has signed a National Letter of Intent to join the Maverick program for the 2004-05 season.

Grasser, a projected 125-pounder, recently completed a 41-0 senior season and brought home the Minnesota Class A title at 119 pounds. Also a fourth-place finisher as a junior, he finished his career with a mark of 131-16. He already has some MSU ties, being coached by former Maverick wrestler Kelly Block.

"Joey had a great senior season but I think he has just scratched the surface of his talent," said Makovsky. "Look for big things from this guy, he has an aggressive, physical style that is needed to succeed at the collegiate level. As a local wrestler, he will be great for our fan base."

The signing of Grasser gives MSU depth at the lighter weights that was not present last season. The Mavericks competed without a 125-pounder for much of last season but now have three grapplers that will vie for mat time. Makovsky will also look to Stephan Pilgram to fill the 141-pound slot when All-American Jason Rhoten bumps up to 149 pounds. The upper weights look solid for next season as All-Americans Travis Krinkie and Josh Janousek return at 174 and 197, respectively. Newcomers John Koons and Cory Harnitz will compete for action as well. Two-time NCAA qualifier Mike Engelmann returns for his senior season at heavyweight.

All signings are contingent upon admission at MSU and compliance with NCAA rules, including certification with the NCAA Clearinghouse.
