Upper Iowa adds three MN recruits

May 26, 2004

Upper Iowa University head wrestling coach Heath Grimm announced three additions to his first NCAA Division II signing class. Daniel Goodson, Tony Gehling and Cory Schmitz have committed to attend Upper Iowa to wrestle for the Peacocks for the 2004-05 season. The three were identified by UIU assistant wrestling coach Nate Skaar, a native of Hayward, Minn., and graduate of Albert Lea High School.

Daniel Goodson, from Rochester, Minn. (Rochester Mayo High School), was a two-time state qualifier. He finished sixth in the Minnesota State Tournament as both a junior and senior. Goodson earned all-conference honors twice. Goodson is expected to compete at 197 pounds for the Peacocks. Daniel is the son of Miriam and Scott Goodson.

Tony Gehling, from Grand Meadow, Minn. (Stewartville High School) is expected to compete at 174 pounds for the Peacocks. He was a four-year starter for Stewartville, a powerhouse in Minnesota's AA Section 1. Tony was a state qualifier in 2003, and helped lead the Tigers to two State Tournament berths as a team. He finished his high school career with 86 wins. Tony is the son of Rick and Peggy Gehling.

Cory Schmitz, from Stewartville, Minn. (Stewartville High School), was a two-time state qualifier, placing fifth in 2002. He was a four-time All-HVL Conference selection and earned All-State Honorable Mention once. Schmitz was also a four-time Minnesota Junior National Team Member and placed second at the Western Regional to qualify for the National Freestyle Wrestling Championships in July. Schmitz compiled a 123-31 high school record, while setting the school record for career takedowns (511) and tying the career mark for pins (68). He is expected to compete at 149 pounds for the Peacocks. Cory is the son of Heidi and Dale Schmitz.

"I am pleased to welcome Dan, Cory and Tony to Upper Iowa University and our wrestling family," said Grimm. "Coach Skaar did an excellent job in identifying these southern Minnesota natives. All three student-athletes have a tremendous work ethic and passion for wrestling. I believe they will progress quickly in our room and become very productive Division II student-athletes."
