Pair of Maverick freshmen named to all-rookie squad
July 16, 2004
Mankato, Minn.-- A pair of Maverick newcomers were rewarded for breakout seasons by being named to the Amateur Wrestling News All-Rookie Team. Freshmen Jason Rhoten (Kasson, Minn.) and Travis Krinkie (Blue Earth, Minn.) were among just six Division II wrestlers named to the elite squad, which recognizes the performances of first-year wrestlers in all three divisions. Both reached All-American status at the 2004 NCAA Division II National Championships held on the campus of Minnesota State.
Krinkie is slated fourth on the squad following a 20-9 season record at 174 pounds and an eighth-place finish at the national meet. He is the top Division II rookie in his class, trailing only athletes from Missouri, Michigan and Cleveland State.
The top Maverick finisher at the national meet, Rhoten is ranked sixth at 141 pounds. He placed fourth nationally last season and compiled a team-best record of 32-6, with three of those losses coming at the hands of Division I opponents. Like Krinkie, he is the top Division II rookie in his class.
"Some may view last season as a rebuilding year for our team and I think we made tremendous strides," said head coach Jim Makovsky. "Travis and Jason are exactly the caliber of wrestlers that we want to build our program around in the years to come. You can expect more big things from this pair."
