North Dakota State tabbed preseason favorite for NCAA Division II title

October 22, 2003

EDMOND, OK - North Dakota State University is the preseason favorite to win the NCAA wrestling championship according to the preseason poll issued Wednesday by the Division II Wrestling Coaches Association. Rankings are based on returning team points from last year's national tournament.

The Bison will be pursuing NDSU's fifth ever national wrestling title, and it will be the last such chance for the Herd. North Dakota State is reclassifying to Division I and will depart Division II and the North Central Conference after this year.

North Dakota State was fourth in Division II last year after qualifying seven wrestlers from the North Central Conference tournament. Four placed in the top eight for All-American honors.

The Bison are two points better than defending NCAA champion Central Oklahoma in the preseason poll. Fellow NCC power Nebraska-Omaha is fourth in the poll, while conference foe St. Cloud State is sixth.

Six North Dakota State wrestlers are in the individual rankings, which list the top eight returners in each of the 10 weight classes.

Four seniors highlight that Bison group. Defending NCAA champion Paul Carlson is rated first at 157 pounds and NCAA runner-up Brian Kraemer is first at 197. Mike Fiedler is second at 165 pounds and Thad Pike is second at 174.

North Dakota State is about two weeks away from its first tournament. NDSU hosts the Bison Open on Saturday, Nov. 8.
