Bison shut out St. Cloud State in conference opener, 43-0

January 11, 2004

ST. CLOUD, MN--Three Bison wrestlers posted wins by fall Sunday to help North Dakota State to its 17th straight North Central Conference wrestling win, a 43-0 rout of St. Cloud State at Halenbeck Hall.

North Dakota State (1-0) got a 3-2 decision from freshman Eric Sanders in the afternoon's opener at 125 pounds against SCSU's Josh Lindquist, and from there the rout was on.

Nick Magee (133) and Mathias Bitz (141) scored back-to-back pins--each coming in the first period--and Zach Stevens followed with a 14-2 major decision at 149 pounds to stake the Herd to a 19-0 lead.

The Bison went up 31-0 with Thad Pike's pin at 174 pounds, and Matt Hermann used two stalling points and a takedown to grab a 5-2 win at 184 as North Dakota State rolled on.

Three-time All-American Brian Kraemer returned from a shoulder injury for the Bison. He won 6-0 at 197 pounds.

The 17-match conference winning streak for NDSU dates back to the 2000-01 season when the Bison lost 22-12 at Nebraska-Omaha.

NDSU will look to extend that streak and a 12-match home victory string on Tuesday night at 7:30 when Minnesota State-Mankato (0-4) comes to the Bison Sports Arena.

St. Cloud State dropped to 0-1 on the season.
