FARGO, ND--North Dakota State won eight weight classes Tuesday night including one by technical fall and another by major decision to defeat Minnesota State-Mankato 27-7 in North Central Conference wrestling before a crowd of 659 at the Bison Sports Arena.
The top-ranked Bison improved to 2-0 overall and 2-0 in the conference heading into this weekend's NWCA National Duals tournament in Cleveland. The 18th-ranked Mavericks dropped to 0-5 overall and 0-1 in the league.
Minnesota State-Mankato was within six points at 9-3 after the Mavs' Jason Rhoten won 4-1 at 141 pounds in the fourth bout of the night, but the Bison answered.
Zach Stevens won by 9-3 decision at 149 and a 19-3 technical fall by Paul Carlson at 157 staked the Herd to a 17-3 advantage.
Thad Pike's 3-1 overtime decision two matches later against Travis Krinkie pushed the lead to 23-3 and sealed NDSU's win.
MSU-Mankato's Jon Dierks rolled up a 12-3 major decision at 184 pounds for the only other Maverick win. NDSU's Brian Kraemer cruised to a 15-2 major decision at 197 for the final score.
The Bison extended their home winning streak to 13 meets and their North Central Conference winning string to 18 meets. NDSU has won 27 of the last 29 duals in the series with Mankato.
