Golden Gophers fall to Wisconsin 17-16 at the Barn

January 30, 2004

The 14th-ranked Wisconsin Badger wrestling team upset No. 11 Minnesota (7-5, 1-2), 17-16, at Williams Arena on Friday night. The Badgers ended a seven-match losing streak to Minnesota.

The match was emotional for a pair of wrestlers from Big Lake, Minn., as Minnesota's Casey Flaherty wrestled his younger brother, Kelly, at 165 pounds. Kelly's twin brother, Ryan, is also a member of the Wisconsin team.

With Minnesota leading 13-12 with two matches to go, Kelly Flaherty gave Wisconsin five team points with a technical fall over his older brother, Casey. The Badgers took a 17-13 lead into the final match.

Minnesota's Jon Duncombe earned a 7-4 decision at 174 pounds over 12th-ranked Ralph DeNisco, but the three team points pulled the Golden Gophers only to within one point at 17-16.

The Badgers won six of the 10 matches, including Brady Reinke's 4-3 decision at 184 pounds to start the match. Reinke got the deciding takedown with just 14 seconds left in the match.

Minnesota took its first lead of the match as top-ranked Damion Hahn returned after missing the last four dual meets. He earned a 17-8 major decision against 16th-ranked Lee Kraemer at 197 pounds.

Redshirt freshman Cole Konrad increased the Golden Gopher lead to 7-3 with a 7-3 decision at heavyweight over Jareck Horton. It was Konrad's team-leading 24th win of the season.

The Badgers won the next two matches to regain the lead. 12th-ranked Tom Clum outlasted No. 11 Bobbe Lowe, 4-3, at 125 pounds. Ed Gutnik followed with a 7-2 decision over Quincy Osborn at 133. Wisconsin led 9-7 entering intermission.

Minnesota returns to the mat on Sunday afternoon vs. Purdue at Williams Arena. The match begins at 2 p.m. A live webcast will be available at gophersports.com
