The Mustang wrestling team lost a close battle to St. Cloud State on Friday, January 30 in SCSU's Halenbeck Hall. SMSU started out strong gaining a 15-6 lead with pins by Keefer Jensen and Shawn Plumley. The Mustangs and Huskies then split the next two rounds to give SMSU a 18-12 lead going into their final three rounds of the night. The Huskies were able to win the next two rounds leaving the match tied 18-18 going into heavy weight showdown between SMSU's Chris Abbott and SCSU's Kyle Stern.
Stern got a takedown and a near-fall with about 30 second to go. Abbott got a reversal to make it 13-7, but Stern then held off Abbott to win the match 13-7 and to give the Huskies their first dual meet win of the season, 21-18 over the Mustangs.
SMSU falls to 5-7 in dual meets and 0-1 in the NSIC. SCSU notches their first win 1-4 overall. Southwest will return home next Wednesday against #18 MSU-Moorhead.
Other highlights:
At 125 Josh Lindquist scored five takedowns and led 10-5 after two periods, but was on his back and very close to being pinned by Ryan Reed in the third period, but then scored a reversal with 17 seconds to go to save a 12-8 decision. Derek Miller won a 7-3 decision for SCSU at 133, but Keefer Jensen pinned Tom Messerli at 141 to even the score 6-0.
At 149 Aldon Struchen of SMSU led 9-7 after one period, but had to go a long time to beat Seth Cole 14-9. Struchen got a takedown and 2-point near fall with less than five seconds to go in the match. Then at 157, Blake Christopherson of SCSU had control in the match with a 9-6 lead, but got caught in a strange position and was pinned by Shawn Plumley at 4:57. The fall gave SMSU a 15-6 lead.
At 165 the Huskies' Dan Duch pulled his patented move and gained a reversal and then a fall at 2:10 over Josh Soupir, moving the Huskies to within three points. Brett Bartholomaus gained a takedown with 1:20 to go in his match against Sean Bere and the Mustang gained a 6-4 decision (1 point for riding time) to put SMSU up 18-12 after the 174-pound match.
Mike Gritti started strong for SCSU at 184, but needed a late takedown to seal a 10-6 decision over Greg Frank, and the Huskies trailed by only three with two matches to go. At 197, the Huskies' Mikal Peterson and SMSU's Joel Wipperfurth battled to a 0-0 tie after one period before Peterson gained a 1-0 lead b y escaping to start the second. Peterson then got a late takedown and a nearfall with under 15 second left in the match to win 8-2 and tie the match 15-15.
