Mankato, Minn. -- Minnesota State won 17 of the 18 contested matches on Saturday, rolling to a pair of non-conference dual victories and extending their winning streak to six matches. The 15th-ranked Mavericks dropped St. Olaf by a score of 51-6 before topping Truman State 39-3 in the nightcap. Earlier in the afternoon, Truman State defeated St. Olaf 36-19.
A forfeit at 125 pounds would be the only points MSU would surrender to the Oles in the dual. First-period falls by sophomore 133-pounder Bryce Bahe (Goodland, Kan.) and seventh-ranked freshman 141-pounder Jason Rhoten (Kasson, Minn.) got the Mavericks going early in the dual. Following a St. Olaf forfeit, freshman Sam Donner (Lakeville, Minn.) won a 2-0 squeaker at 157 pounds. Freshman George Lynaugh (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) began a string of Maverick pins with a fall at 6:10, followed by a fall at 1:11 by fellow newcomer Travis Krinkie (Blue Earth, Minn.). Senior 184-pounder Jon Dierks (Waldorf, Minn.) wasted no time in his match, dropping his opponent directly to his back for a fall in 18 seconds. Following another forfeit at 197 pounds, junior Mike Engelmann (Spencer, Iowa) closed out the match with a pin at 2:39.
The final dual of the evening began much like the first, with Bahe and Rhoten dominating the action early. Bahe collected a 16-1 technical fall win as time expired in the second period to earn five team points. Rhoten was even more impressive, racking up 13 nearfall points en route to a 15-0 technical fall in just 1:52. Freshman Brandon Girtz (Forest Lake, Minn.) notched a first-period fall to give MSU a 16-0 lead after 149 pounds. At 157 pounds, newcomer Sam Donner (Lakeville, Minn.) used a late takedown with nearfall points to secure a 14-3 major decision. Lynaugh picked up a 7-1 decision before Krinkie won his sixth consecutive match at 174 by a score of 14-6. Dierks dropped the only MSU decision of the night, falling 8-5 at 184 pounds. The Mavericks would recover and finish in strong fashion with falls at the final two weights. Junior Josh Janousek (Greenbush, Minn.) took his opponent directly to his back and ended the match at 1:34 before Engelmann got his second fall of the night in just 1:30.
The Mavericks, now 6-5 in dual action, travel to face Nebraska-Omaha on Feb. 13. They return home for a pair of duals against Northern State and St. Cloud State on Feb. 19-20. Match time for all three duals is set for 7:00 p.m.
