South Dakota State won six of 10 matches, including a pin by heavyweight Craig Martinmaas, to end a three-dual losing slide with a 24-15 victory over Southwest Minnesota State in non-conference wrestling action Friday night at Frost Arena.
With the win, SDSU improves to 4-7 in duals. The Mustangs fall to 5-9 in dual action.
After Southwest Minnesota State took a 6-3 lead after a 10-8 decision by Tim Johns over SDSU's Travis Gottschalk at 174 pounds, the Jackrabbits took a 19-9 lead by winning four of the next five matches. Ben Ericks started the string with a 12-7 sudden-victory decision over Greg Frank. Ericks trailed 6-3 after the second period before scoring a reversal and takedown to force overtime, where he recorded a takedown and three-point near fall in the first 25 seconds of the extra session.
Backup 197-pounder Cody Nehl followed with a 4-3 decision over Joel Wipperfurth and Martinmaas added SDSU's lone pin of the evening with nine seconds remaining in his match with Chris Abbott.
Following a Brice Whitacre 4-1 decision over the Jackrabbits' Garrett Houska in the 125-pound weight class, Chris Werth notched an 11-3 major decision over Ryan Reed at 133 pounds to give SDSU its 10-point cushion.
But Southwest Minnesota State nearly stole the dual as Mustang 141-pounder Keefer Jensen pinned Chad Herrboldt in 1:03 to cut the margin to 19-15, and Aldon Struchen gave SDSU's Jeremy Roe an early scare in the final match of the night at 149 pounds.
In the final minute of the first period, Struchen recorded a takedown of Roe and added a two-point near-fall. Roe quickly countered with a reversal and four three-point near-falls to take a commanding 14-4 lead. Roe ended the bout by technical fall with two more 3-point near-falls in the third period.
SDSU 165-pounder Nathan Althoff put the Jackrabbits on the board in the second match of the night with a 3-2 decision over Brett Bartholomaus.
