Augustana downs South Dakota State

February 19, 2004

Eighth-ranked Augustana won the final five matches to pull away for a 30-7 victory over South Dakota State in the final wrestling dual meet of the season for both teams Thursday night at Frost Arena.

The Vikings improved to 7-6 overall, 2-3 in the NCC, while SDSU dropped to 4-10 overall, 1-4 in NCC duals.

SDSU started off on the right foot as Joe Kenton earned a 5-4 decision over Matt McDougall in the evening's first match, at 157 pounds.

Augustana countered with a pair of one-point decisions of its own to take a lead it would not relinquish. Cody Henriksen recorded a takedown with eight seconds left to down the Jackrabbits' Andy Everson 8-7 in the 165-pound weight class, and Dusty Wilking took a 3-2 decision over Nathan Althoff, who was wrestling up a weight class for SDSU, at 174 pounds.

Tim Boldt, ranked fifth at 197 pounds, was the only other winner for the Jackrabbits, improving to 23-4 with an 11-1 major decision over Tyler Bullerman that pulled SDSU to within 10-7.

However, Augustana won the last five matches, recording two decisions, two major decisions and picking up a medical forfeit.

Both teams return to action Feb. 29 at the NCAA Division II North Regional in St. Cloud, Minn. The top four wrestlers in each weight class will advance to the NCAA Division II Championships Mar. 12-13 in Mankato, Minn.
