Concordia College Update
January 11, 2005
It's Nice to be Back: After taking some time off for Winter Vacation the Cobbers are back on the mat. Last weekend the Cobbers competed in the Dickinson State Open. The Concordia wrestlers were again led by their Captains Lee Rahrlien and Dennis Kline. Rahrlien placed third in a very competitive 157-pound bracket. His only loss on the day came at the hands of a highly ranked NAIA wrestler. Dennis Kline placed second at 197 pounds. Dennis started the day in dominating fashion earning a technical fall in his first match and pinning his second opponent. In the finals Dennis however found himself on his back mid-way through the second period and was unable to fight off. The rest of the Concordia team also wrestled well. Mitch Gabrielson came away with two wins at 174 pounds. Kevin "Smokey" McBride wrestled a great first round match winning an exciting match. Unfortunately he ran into some very skilled Div.II wrestlers from Nebraska in the next two rounds and was bumped from the tournament. Wes Graff who was very ill throughout the tournament turned in his best performance of the year earning a fall late in the third period of his second round match. Dustin Weege and Zach Schumack both turned in gritty performances for the Cobbers at 149 pounds.
Coming Up: The Concordia Wrestlers are excited to travel to St. Johns this weekend to take part in the "Terry Haws" dual tournament. This will be the first dual competition for the Cobbers this year. This will also be the first time that the team will have all of their wrestlers competing due to injuries and illness at prior meets. The tournament should be a good indicator to show where the young Cobber squad is. Participating teams will include Minnesota State University Moorhead, Rochester Community College, Southwest State University, St. Johns University, St. Olaf College, University of Regina, University of Wisconsin LaCrosse and Concordia University from Wisconsin.
