Jacks come home to take on Northern Colorado

BROOKINGS, S.D. -- After going 3-0 in competition at the Virginia Duals and capturing the American College Division title, the South Dakota State University wrestling team returns home Saturday to take on former North Central Conference foe Northern Colorado .

Competition begins at 1 p.m. at Frost Arena.

The Jackrabbits are 6-2 in duals this season and are on a four-match winning streak, dating back to January 8, when they defeated Portland State at the Oregon Duals 29-20.

Northern Colorado is coming off a 37-9 victory over Portland State last Sunday. UNC won seven of the 10 matches over visiting Portland State and recorded three pins and two technical falls in the match.The Bears are 2-4 over all in duals this season.

VIRGINIA DUALS RECAP: The South Dakota State wrestlers captured the American College Division title last Saturday night, defeating Duquesne (Pa.) 29-12 in the final round of the Virginia Duals.

SDSU 21, Millersville (Pa.) 19

The Jackrabbits opened the two-day tournament with a 21-19 victory over Millersville (Pa.) in the opening round of the Virginia Duals.

Chris Werth put the second-seeded Jackrabbits on the board with a pin in 3 minutes, 34 seconds in the 133-pound weight class.

After Andy Everson scored a 9-3 victory at 157 pounds for SDSU, Nate Althoff made quick work of his opponent, recording a pin in 30 seconds.

Cody Nehl gave the Jackrabbits a 21-16 lead with a fall in 2:12 at 197 pounds. Newcomer Scott Revier, wrestling his first collegiate match in two years, held his own at heavyweight before dropping a 7-2 decision -- enough to give the Jackrabbits the victory.

SDSU 31, Davidson 15

South Dakota State wrestlers picked up four pins in defeating Davidson (N.C.) 31-15 in the semifinals of the Virginia Duals last Saturday afternoon.

Dusty Kavitz put the Jackrabbits on the board with a pin in 4 minutes, 21 seconds in the 149-pound weight class.

Sophomore Andy Everson scored a 9-4 victory at 157 pounds for SDSU, while Nate Althoff made quick work of his opponent, recording a pin in 1:17.

After Levi Krehmeyer recorded a 10-1 victory at 184 pounds, Cody Nehl recorded a pin in 2:17 at 197 pounds. Newcomer Scott Revie recorded a pin in 23 seconds at heavyweight, giving SDSU the 31-15 victory.

SDSU 29, Duquesne 12

The South Dakota State wrestlers captured the American College Division title by defeating Duquesne (Pa.) 29-12 in the final round of the Virginia Duals.

Marcus Waters put the Jackrabbits on the board scoring a 18-9 win in the 125-pound weight class.

Sophomore Chris Werth scored a 2-1 victory at 133 pounds for SDSU, while Chad Herrboldt, recorded a pin in 1 minute, 43 seconds.

Sophomore Andy Everson scored a 13-2 victory at 157 pounds, while Nate Althoff recorded a 6-2 decision at 165 pounds.

After Travis Gottschalk recorded a 6-3 victory at 174 pounds, Cody Nehl recorded a pin in 1:18 at 197 pounds. SDSU forfeited at heavyweight.

Liles records 200th collegiate victory

South Dakota State University wrestling coach Jason Liles reached another career milestone over the weekend as the Jackrabbits captured the American College Division title at the Virginia Duals.

Liles, in his 21st season as a collegiate head coach, recorded his 200th career dual victory Jan. 15 as SDSU defeated Duqusne (Pa.) 29-12 in the championship match. So far this season, he has guided the Jackrabbits to a 6-2 dual record in their first year of competition at the NCAA Division I level.

Entering Saturday afternoon's home dual against Northern Colorado, Liles has compiled a 200-103-1 career dual record, including a 111-65-1 mark at SDSU. He ranks second on the Jackrabbit career victories list, trailing the late Warren Williamson (134-74-9 dual record from 1957-73).

NEHL PINNING AWAY OPPONENTS: Cody Nehl, a junior from Watauga, followed up his two victories at the Oregon Classic Duals by going undefeated in Virginia. Nehl previously racked up a pair of pins against Pacific and Portland State in his final two bouts at the Oregon Classic Duals, and followed that up by recording a pin in every match in Virginia. In the three matches combined in Virginia, Nehl pinned his opponent in a combined time of 5 minutes, 47 seconds. Nehl has a 10-10 record on the year.

ALTHOFF CONTINUES WINNING WAYS: Nate Althoff, a sophomore from Watertown, followed up his 2-1 record at the Oregon Classic Duals by also going undefeated in Virginia. Althoff opened up the Virginia Duals making quick work of Jesse Gronlie of Millersville, recording a pin in 30 seconds. In second-round compeptition Althoff pinned his Davidson oppenent in 1 minute, 17 seconds. In the championship round Althoff helped lead the Jacks to the American College division title by defeating his opponent in a 6-2 decision. With Althoff's three victories in Virginia, he has now recorded a 24-6 record on the year.

FIRST WIN IN TWO YEARS: The newest member of the South Dakota State University wrestling team Scott Revier, recorded his first win in wrestling competition in two years this past weekend. Revier, who had earlier in the tournament helped lead SDSU to a first-round victory over Millersville, made fast work of his opponent in the second-round, pinning John Pollak of Davidson in 23 seconds. A native of Olivia, Minn., Revier is a senior at SDSU who previously wrestled at Augsburg College (Minn.), where he recorded a 36-22 overall record.

JACKS USE PIN TO WIN: The South Dakota State University wrestling team recorded a total of nine pins in competition this past weekend at the Virginia Duals.The Jacks opened the tournament picking up three pins to put away Millersville. SDSU did one better in second-round competition, recording four pins to defeat Davidson 31-15.The Jacks closed out the tournament with two pins in the finals from Chad Herrboldt and Cody Nehl, en route to the American College Division title.

JACKS ADD DUALS:The South Dakota State University wrestling team has lined up two more duals against Division I opponents for the 2004-2005 season. The Jackrabbits have added duals at Millersville (Pa.) on Feb . 18 and at American University in Washington, D.C., on Feb . 20.
