Concordia College Update

January 20, 2005

Strong Start: The Cobbers from Moorhead started their dual meet season with a bang. Concordia College of Moorhead lost a tough first round match to Concordia University of Wisconsin in the first round of the "Terry Haws" duals held last weekend. But it was all Cobbers from there. Concordia reeled off three straight wins to finish off the day. In the second round of the tournament Concordia defeated the University of Regina 41-6. That win got the young Cobber squad rolling as they man-handled conference foe St. Olaf in the next round 52-0. This is the first time in over twenty years the Cobbers have shut out St. Olaf in a dual match. In the final match of the day Concordia met up with Nationally Ranked Rochester Community College (7th NJCAA). Again the Cobbers prevailed winning the match 33-24.

Three Cobber wrestlers posted 4-0 records on the day. Smokey McBride had two falls and two forfeits at 125 pounds. Lee Rahrlien, the Cobbers 157 pound captain, scored a fall, a technical fall, a major decision and a decision on the day. Dominating Dennis Kline, the Cobbers other captain, scored four falls on the day to help lead his team to a 3-1 start on the season.

Other highlights on the day included Matt Gastecki and Thane Taylor getting their first career wins as Cobbers. Thane Taylor started his career on a strong note winning three matches on the day. Matt Gastecki who wrestled at heavyweight came away with two wins on the day, one coming by fall.

Rolling on: The Concordia College wrestling team continued their winning ways Wednesday night as they defeated NCAA Division II Northern State for the second consecutive year. The Cobbers racked up 27 points on their way to defeating Northern State. Smokey McBride, Wes Graff, Thane Taylor, Lee Rahrlien, Dave Ahmed and Dennis Kline all came away with victories for the Cobbers.

Leadership: The Cobbers strong start is due in large part to the tremendous leadership shown by Lee Rahrlien and Dennis Kline. Since the Christmas break Lee has won 9 of 10 matches and Dennis has won 7 of 8. Six of Dominating Dennis' wins have come by fall.

Milestone: New Concordia Head Coach Clay Nagel won his first dual match as the head coach of the Cobbers when his team defeated Northern State on the road 27-15. Coach Nagel guided his last team the Frazee Hornets to an amazing 353-73 record. With his team starting the season 4-1 Coach Nagel is looking to build a strong tradition of wrestling at Concordia.

Up Next: Concordia will wrestle powerhouses Minnesota State University Moorhead and St. John's University on Saturday. The duals will take place at the Memorial Auditorium on the campus of Concordia College. Action starts at 6:30.
