Mavericks finish fifth at NWCA National Duals

Cleveland, Ohio - Minnesota State concluded the NWCA/Cliff Keen national dual meet with a fifth place finish Saturday. MSU defeated Mercyhurst 24-13, lost to Central Oklahoma 18-16 and defeated Pittsburgh-Johnstown 21-12 for the fifth place title.

MSU took six of 10 matches against Mercyhurst, notching a nine point victory. Freshman Nick Smith (Yankton, S.D.) lost his first match as a Maverick in a 3-2 decision to #6 Ricky Randazzo at 125 pounds. Sophomore Efrain Ayala (Grand Island, Neb.) evened the team score with a 6-3 decision over J.J. Zanetta at 133 pounds. At 141 pounds, sophomore Brandon Girtz (Forest Lake, Minn.) added three points for the Mavericks with a 6-4 decision over Ryan Finn.

Mercyhurst won the next three matches, claiming decisions at 149 and 157 and a major at 165, giving the Lakers a 13-6 lead. MSU took the next four matches sealing the victory. Sophomore #3 Travis Krinkie (Blue Earth, Minn.) recieved his 20th victory and six points when Zack Schafer was disqualified. Junior #8 John Koons (Crosby, Minn.) started his perfect day with 7-5 decision. At 197 pounds, senior #5 Josh Janousek (Greenbush, Minn.) rolled to a 3-1 decision before senior heavyweight Mike Engelmann (Spencer, Iowa) stuck Angelo Caponi at 1:34, bringing the match to a final at 24-13.

The Mavericks took on Central Oklahoma in their next match, losing 18-16. The match went into the heavyweight division with the Mavericks leading 16-15. #4 ranked Josh Leadingfox pulled a four point move to seal a 10-6 decision and a 18-16 victory for Central Oklahoma. MSU then wrestled against Pittsburgh Johnstown.

MSU took decisions at 125 and 133 before giving up a decision and a fall at 133 and 141 respectively. At 157 pounds, junior Mathias Bitz (Bismarck N.D.) picked up his 20th victory of the season with a 4-2 decision. The Mavericks gave up a decision at 165 before closing the match with four straight victories, including #8 Koons' and Engelmann's 20th victories of the season.

Up next for the Maverick's, a dual meet Jan. 27 against Southwest Minnesota State at 7:00 p.m. in the Taylor Center.
