St. Cloud State update

HUSKIES HEAD TO COLLEGVILLE: The St. Cloud State wrestling team (0-3, 0-2 NCC) will continue its dual meet season as they head to St. John's University for the North Country Invite on February 5, 2005. The event is set to start at 9:00 a.m. in Collegeville, Minn. on the campus of SJU.

HUSKIES FALL TO #18 MINNESOTA STATE, MOORHEAD: The St. Cloud State wrestling team fell to #18 nationally ranked Minnesota State University Moorhead on Saturday, January 29 at Halenbeck Hall. The final score was 13-29. The loss drops SCSU's dual match record to 0-3, 0-2 NCC this season. Here is a rundown of the individual match scores from Jan. 29:

TEAM NOTES: SCSU posted a 1-8, 0-5 NCC record in 2003-04. At the NCAA DII Regional in 2004, the Huskies placed ninth overall, but Derek Miller did qualify for the national meet last year at 133-pounds. He posted a 1-2 record at the national meet in 2004...the Huskies had an incredible finish by the 2002-2003 wrestling team. The team sent four Huskies to Nationals and three became All-Americans, allowing a 9th place team finish at the NCAA Division II championships. The Huskies' 9th place finish at the NCAA meet was the team's best since finishing 8th in 1985-86. The team's best NCAA finish was a 7th place ending in 1982-83...back in the 1960s, the Huskies placed third at the NAIA meet in 1963 and 1965...of note, the 2005 NCAA Division II North Regional meet will be held at Southwest Minnesota State in Marshall on Feb. 27. The NCAA Division II championships will be hosted by Nebraska-Omaha on March 11-12 in Omaha, Neb...four of the seven teams in the North Central Conference are ranked in the nation's top 20 Division II poll. Of note, Minnesota State, Moorhead, Northern State and Southwest Minnesota State will all wrestle as affiliate members of the NCC this year.

SCSU COACHING STAFF: The Huskies are led this season by Steve Grimit (Western Illinois, 1987). Grimit is in his 12th season as head coach of the Huskies. Grimit has led the Huskies to a 62-81 overall/21-50 NCC record since 1993. In 2003, he led his wrestling squad to a ninth place finish at the NCAA Championships. Grimit joined the SCSU staff following four seasons at Valparaiso (IN) University. As the SCSU wrestling coach, Grimit has enjoyed success during the past eleven seasons. In 1995, Grimit guided SCSU's Gene Hanemann to an NCAA Division II national title at 158-pounds. In 1996 and 1997, Grimit coached Andy Reigstad to consecutive runner-up finishes at the NCAA meet in the 150-pound category. Grimit graduated from Western Illinois University in 1987 with a bachelor's degree in physical education. He received a master's degree in sport management/ athletic administration from WIU in 1988.
