St. Cloud State Update

HUSKIES HAVE TWO UPCOMING MEETS: The St. Cloud State wrestling team (0-3, 0-2 NCC) will continue its North Central Conference season as they will play host to the top ranked University of Nebraska-Omaha on Friday, February 11, 2005. The event is set to start at 6:00 p.m. in Halenbeck Hall on the SCSU campus. The following day, the Huskies will head to Collegeville, Minn. for a duel meet with St. John's University. That event will take place on the campus of SJU and begin at 3:00 p.m.
POHLMEIER CLAIMS THIRD AT NORTH COUNTRY: Collegeville, Minn. -- The St. Cloud State wrestling team participated in the annual North Country Open on Feb. 5, at St. John's University in Collegeville. SCSU was led by Lukas Pohlmeier, who captured third place at 184-pounds and Shane Tappe who captured fourth place at 157- pounds. Of note, no team scores were kept at this tournament that featured many of the nation's top NCAA Division II and III wrestlers.
Pohlmeier posted a solid 3-1 record at the tournament to gain top three honors. Pohlmeier won his first two matches in the bracket, before he suffered a tough loss to Augsburg's Brad Tupa (the eventual tournament champ) in the semi-finals. In the match for third place, Pohlmeier charted a solid 7-5 win over Chris Eagan of Dana College. Tappe posted a solid 4-2 record at the tournament to gain top four honors. Tappe lost his first match of the day to #3 Jaime Garcia, who wrestles for Dickinson. Tappe bounced back to win his next four matches, before dropping the third-place match to Tim Matzek of Augsburg, with a 4-0 decision.
In other SCSU action, Brent Johnson was 0-2 at 133-pounds, while Adam Minnette gained a 3-2 tourney record at 149-pounds. His record included a big 13-8 win over #7 seed Rusty Taper of Dana. At 157-pounds, Blake Christopherson was 0-2 and Sean Beere was also 0-2 at 165-pounds. Nate Schut, also wrestling at 165-pounds, was 2-2 in tournament action. At 174-pounds, Tom Anderson gained a 1-2 record and Mike Gritti had an indentical 1-2 mark at 197-pounds. At the heavyweight spot, Brad Nowak chalked up a 1-2 record.
SCSU COACHING STAFF: The Huskies are led this season by Steve Grimit (Western Illinois, 1987). Grimit is in his 12th season as head coach of the Huskies. Grimit has led the Huskies to a 62-81 overall/21-50 NCC record since 1993. In 2003, he led his wrestling squad to a ninth place finish at the NCAA Championships. Grimit joined the SCSU staff following four seasons at Valparaiso (IN) University. As the SCSU wrestling coach, Grimit has enjoyed success during the past eleven seasons. In 1995, Grimit guided SCSU's Gene Hanemann to an NCAA Division II national title at 158-pounds. In 1996 and 1997, Grimit coached Andy Reigstad to consecutive runner-up finishes at the NCAA meet in the 150-pound category. Grimit graduated from Western Illinois University in 1987 with a bachelor's degree in physical education. He received a master's degree in sport management/ athletic administration from WIU in 1988.
