Jacks close home dual season

BROOKINGS, S.D. -- The South Dakota State University wrestling team will close out home dual action Tuesday, when it hosts a double dual against Dakota Wesleyan and Nothern State.The Jackrabbits , 7-6 in duals this season, will wrestle Dakota Wesleyan at 6 p.m. at Frost Arena, followed by a dual against Northern State.

Dakota Wesleyan is coming off a 29-16 loss to Morningside on Feb. 9 and wrestled in the Great Plains Athletic Conference tournament this past weekend, finishing fourth in the team standings. The Tigers are 1-9 in dual action this year. Northern State is coming off a 25-17 victory over Southwest Minnesota State on Feb. 9 and is 7-6-1 on the season.

DUAL RECAP: Northern Iowa 34, SDSU 3

Thirteenth-ranked Northern Iowa won nine of 10 weights as the Panthers defeated South Dakota State 34-3 last Friday night at Frost Arena.

UNI's victories included technical falls at 165 and 174, and a first-period pin at 197.

SDSU's lone victory came at 141, where freshman Dusty Kavitz rallied from a 6-1 deficit to defeat Justin Swaffer 8-6. Kavitz had a reversal and two-point near fall at the end of the second period to close within 6-5, then got an escape to open the third period and went ahead with a takedown with 1:03 to go.

UNI's pin came at 197, where Sean Stender, ranked No. 8 in Division I, scored a takedown 19 seconds into the match and pinned Cody Nehl.

Sturgis native Eric Hauan scored a technical fall at 174.

SDSU moved to 7-6 overall, while the Panthers moved to 7-7.

LAST MATCH OF CAREER: The South Dakota State University wrestling team will close out its dual season this Tuedsday night at SDSU. It will mark the last wrestling event for three seniors on the Jackrabbit squad: Garrett Houska and Jeremy Roe and Scott Revier. Roe is a three-time national qualifier and was a Division II All-American in 2004, placing sixth at the national tournament at 149 pounds. Houska has lettered the last two years. Combined the two wrestlers have combined for 70 wins and 50 losses.

In addition, Scott Revier, who joined the Jackrabbits at semester break will be recognized. He has a 2-5 record this season.

FOUR-MATCH HOMESTAND: The South Dakota State University wrestling team lost to Northern Iowa 34-3 last Friday night to stand at 1-1 in a four-match homestand.The Jacks will take on Dakota Wesleyan and Northern State this Tuesday and will conclude its home matches for the season. SDSU has a 3-2 record at home this year.

KAVITZ WITH THE COMEBACK: Dusty Kavitz, a freshman from Medford, Minn. moved to 13-9 on the year after this past weekend. Kavitz put the Jacks on the board against the Panthers, after recording a 8-6 decision over Justin Swaffer in the third period.

JACKS WN AGAINST DI: The South Dakota State University wrestling team has compiled a 5-5 record against Division I opponents after last Frida y' s match against UNI.The Jacks will face three more by the end of the season. SDSU' s last win over a Division I opponent at home was against Princeton (N. J.) on Dec. 10. The Jacks will end the year with road matches at Millersville (Pa.), American University in Washington, D.C., and North Dakota State.

LILES HAS MILESTONE: South Dakota State University wrestling coach reached another career milestone at the Virginia Duals.

Liles, in his 12th season as Jackrabbit head coach, recorded his 200th career dual victory Jan. 15 as SDSU defeated Duquesne (Pa.) 29-12 in the championship match of the Virginia Duals to capture the American College Division title. Liles has compiled a 112-69-1 mark while at SDSU.

JACKS ADD WRESTLER: The South Dakota State University wrestling team has added wrestler Scott Revier to the 2004-2005 roster. Revier who is a senior at SDSU, will wrestle at the heavyweight poistion for the Jacks. Revier is from Olivia, Minn. and moved to 2-5 on the year after last Friday.
