The SJU wrestling team competed at the NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional on Saturday, Feb. 19, at Augsburg in Minneapolis and finished in fourth place out of 15 teams with 105.5 team points. Augsburg won the team title with 256 points, while Elmhurst, Ill. was second with 138.5 points and North Central, Ill. was third with 111 points.
SJU junior Dan Fiecke (Winsted, Minn./Holy Trinity ) with a 21-1 overall record finished second at 197 pounds and sophomore Jacob Malone (New York Mills, Minn.) with a 21-13 overall record finished third at 157 pounds to qualify for the NCAA Championships as wild card selections. The regional champions at all 10 weight classes and 11 wild card selections advanced to nationals. Fiecke will be competing in his third straight NCAA Championships and finished fifth in 2004 to earn All-America honors.
Other SJU wrestlers to place at the Great Lakes Regional included junior Nate Schraan (Eagan, Minn.) finishing fourth at 125 pounds, senior Nathan Lefebvre (Elk River, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville) finishing fifth at 141 pounds, junior Charlie Sadder (Shoreview, Minn./Totino-Grace) finishing fifth at 149 pounds, junior Dan Willaert (North Mankato, Minn./Mankato Loyola) taking fifth at 184 pounds, freshman Jason Finley (Lake City, Minn.) taking fifth at heavyweight and junior Jamie Compean (El Paso, Texas) taking sixth at 133 pounds. Eight of SJU's 10 wrestlers placed in the top six of their respective weight classes.
