SCSU advances one to NCAA Nationals

HUSKIES AT NCAA DIV. II NORTH REGIONALS: The St. Cloud State wrestling team (0-6, 0-3 NCC) participated in the NCAA Division II North Regional meet on Sunday, February 27. The event took place at Southwest Minnesota State University, and the lone Husky to advance to the NCAA Nationals is junior Nathan Schut (9-9) from Monticello, Minn.
HUSKIES ADVANCE NATHAN SCHUT TO NATIONALS: Marshall, Minn. -- The St. Cloud State University wrestling will send Nathan Schut to the upcoming 2005 NCAA Division II wrestling championships on March 11-12 at the University of Nebraska-Omaha. Schut placed third at the NCAA Division II North Regional held at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall on Feb. 27. Schut was the top Husky with a third place finish in the 165-pound bracket. He opened the tournament with a 13-2 win over Greg Frank of Southwest Minnesota State before losing to Cody Henricksen of Augustana. In the wrestlebacks, Schut posted a 9-2 win over Jeremiah Novak of Mankato and a 7-4 win over Rockie Stavn of Moorhead in the third place bout.
SCSU wrestlers Mike Gritti, Brad Nowak and Lukas Pohlmeier each missed qualifying for Nationals by one place as they finished in fifth place. Only the top four finishers advance to the NCAA National Tournament. At 197-pounds, Gritti charted a 1-2 record as he edged Joel Wipperfurth of SMSU by a 5-2 margin in the bout for true fourth place. At heavyweight, Nowak gained a 2-2 record on the day. In his match for true fifth place, Nowak gained an injury forfeit over Jess Hockley of Northern State. Of note, Lukas Pohlmeier was 2-2 on the day at 184-pounds. In his bout for true fourth place, Pohlmeier suffered a tough 7-2 loss to Todd Nasz of NSU.
As a team, SCSU posted 12.5 points and placed sixth overall. Augustana was the team champ with 109 points and Nebraska-Omaha was second at 99 points. Minnesota State-Mankato (84), Minnesota State-Moorhead (52), Northern State (24) and Southwest Minnesota State (7.5) completed the field.
Other SCSU wrestlers in action included Brent Johnson, who was 0-2 at 133-pounds. Tom Messerli was 1-2 at 141-pounds and Adam Minnette was 2-2, which included a 11-5 win over Jesse Wood in the bout for fifth place. At 157-pounds, Blake Christopherson was 0-2 and Sean Beere was 0-2 at 174-pounds.
