Pair of talented grapplers sign to become Mavericks
April 15, 2005
Mankato, Minn.--- Minnesota State head coach Jim Makovsky has announced the signing of two student-athletes to National Letters of Intent to join the Maverick wrestling program. Waseca, Minn., natives Lucas Meuer and Tom Block will begin their MSU careers in the 2005-06 season.
Meuer, a projected 141-pounder, completed his career at WHS with a record of 138-32. He placed sixth at the Minnesota state tournament at 135 pounds in 2004. Blue Jay teammate Block capped his career with a runner-up finish at heavyweight at the state meet and a 33-3 senior record. He also placed sixth at heavyweight last season and finished with a 70-17 career ledger. Makovsky has him slated to participate at 197 pounds, a slot vacated by departing All-American Josh Janousek.
"The key to Tom and Luke will be making the transition from high school to college," said Makovsky. "The fact that they are from the area makes it a win-win situation for both parties. They were coached well in high school and already understand they will have to work extremely hard to be successful at the next level.
"We are very excited that Tom and Luke have decided to become part of the Minnesota State wrestling family. They have the mentality that we look for in recruits that team goals are as important as individual goals. Both have the potential to make and immediate impact as we work toward bringing a national championship trophy back to MSU."
The Mavericks finished third at the NCAA Division II National Championships this season, their best finish since a runner-up placing in 1993-94. Five individuals earned All-American honors and three of those will return next season.
All signings are contingent upon admission to MSU and compliance with NCAA rules, including certification by the NCAA Clearinghouse.
