Augustana adds two recruits
April 29, 2005
Sioux Falls, S.D. * Two successful high school wrestlers have signed national letters of intent to attend Augustana College and wrestle for the Vikings, head coach Jason Reitmeier announced today. Joining the Vikings' roster are Brett Lutmer of Omaha, Neb., and Tobyn Ward of Council Bluffs, Iowa.
Lutmer is a two-time All-River Cities Conference performer at Skutt High School. He won the Class B 215-pound state title as a junior with a 42-4 record and finished third as a senior with a 37-3 record. He also helped the Skyhawks win their eighth straight team state championship. He spent the first two years of high school at Marshall (Minn.) High School where he was a two-time honorable mention all-conference performer. He qualified for the state tournament as a freshman in 2001-02. Lutmer's four-year career record was 123-34. He is expected to wrestle at heavyweight for the Vikings.
Ward was a four-year starter at Lewis Central High School in Council Bluffs. He was a three-time conference and district champion, as well as a three-time state tournament qualifier. He placed third as a junior and senior, posting a 49-4 record both years. He had a four-year career record of 160-18. In addition, he helped lead the Titans to state titles in 2202 and 2004, a second-place finish in 2005 and a fourth-place finish in 2003. He is expected to wrestle at 133 pounds at Augustana.
"We are very excited to have Tobyn and Brett joining the Viking wrestling team," Reitmeier said. "They both come from winning high school programs and will help us continue ours. They both will make an immediate impact on our team and that is what we were looking for."
Augustana enjoyed one of its best seasons in school history in 2004-05. The Vikings won the North Central Conference and North Regional championships en route to a runner-up finish at the NCAA Division II National Championships. Augie crowned two national champions, Tom Meester and Aaron Graumann, and had a total of seven All-Americans. The Vikings will return eight national qualifiers for the 2005-06 season.
