Safratowich named Most Outstanding Wrestler at FILA Junior Nationals
May 2, 2005 - Golden Gopher freshman Tyler Safratowich was named Most Oustanding Wrestler at the FILA Junior Greco-Roman National Championships this past weekend in Las Vegas, Nev. A native of Park Rapids, Minn., Safratowich went 4-0 enroute to the title at 66 kg. He upset top-seeded Jade McCammon in the finals.
Minnesota had three other wrestlers place in the Greco-Roman division. Freshman Travis Lang finished in second place at 60 kg after falling to Elijah Hutchinson in the finals. Sophomore Justin Bronson placed fourth, while freshman Brendon Flynn placed eighth at 96 kg.
Golden Gopher redshirt freshman Manuel Rivera posted a seventh place showing in freestyle at 66 kg. Rivera went 13-12 this past season for Minnesota and made two starts during the dual meet season at 141 pounds.
USA Wrestling FILA Junior Nationals results
A trio of former Golden Gopher All-Americans competed in the Senior National Championships in Las Vegas, as well. Former NCAA Champion Jared Lawrence took home second place in freestyle at 66 kg. Fellow NCAA Champion Luke Becker placed seventh at 74 kg.
Three-time All-American Jacob Volkmann earned a runner-up finish in Greco-Roman at 74 kg. He was defeated by Darryl Christian in the finals.
