Konrad selected to participate in 2004-05 Marines All-Star Classic
November 1, 2004
University of Minnesota sophomore wrestler Cole Konrad has been selected to participate in the 39th annual Marines All-Star Classic on November 22 on the campus of Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville. The event pits the top two ranked wrestlers at each weight class in a dual meet format. The event will be televised by College Sports Television.
A heavyweight from Freedom, Wis., Konrad enters the 2004-05 season ranked second in the nation. Last year as a redshirt freshman, he earned All-American status after a fourth- place finish at the NCAA Championships. With a 38-10 record, Konrad had the most wins ever by a Golden Gopher heavyweight.
Konrad will face top-ranked Steve Mocco of Oklahoma State. Mocco was the 2003 NCAA Champion while a member of the University of Iowa Hawkeyes. After sitting out last season to train for the 2004 Summer Olympics, Mocco transferred to Oklahoma State and will have two seasons of eligibility left.
The Golden Gophers open their 2004-05 season on Nov. 13 at the Bison Open. No. 6 Minnesota opens its dual meet season on Dec. 5 against top-ranked Oklahoma State at the Sports Pavilion.
