Golden Gopher Wrestling signs outstanding fall recruiting class

November 15, 2004

The University of Minnesota wrestling program has announced the signing of three top prospects, including the nation's top recruit for the fourth time in the last nine years. Dustin Schlatter, Nate Matousek and Jayson Ness have all signed national letters of intent to wrestle for the Golden Gophers beginning in the 2005-06 season.

Considered the top recruit in the nation, Schlatter is a three-time Ohio state champion and has won a total of six Junior and Cadet National Freestyle and Greco-Roman titles. Schlatter is expected to wrestle at 149/157 for the Golden Gophers. He is the younger brother of current Golden Gopher redshirt freshman C.P. Schlatter, who was one of the top recruits in the country in 2003 and is projected to start for Minnesota at 149 pounds this season.

A native of Glencoe, Minn., Matousek is a two-time Minnesota state champion at 152 pounds and is a five-time state tournament participant. Matousek enters his senior season with 198 career wins and could challenge the state record for victories (233). That mark is currently held by Golden Gopher redshirt freshman Mitch Kuhlman.

Ness was a 2003 state champion and a 2004 runner-up at Bloomington Kennedy High School. He enters his senior season with a 116-14 career record. Considered one of the best 125/130 wrestlers in the nation, he was a 2004 Junior National Champion in Greco-Roman, and a runner-up in freestyle.
