St. Cloud State opens 2004-05 season

The St. Cloud State University wrestliing team opened its 2004-05 season with appearances at the 2004 Williamson/Daktronics Open in Brookings, S.D. on Nov. 6, and the Bison Open in Fargo, N.D. on Nov. 13.

At the Bison Open, Matt Jensen posted a 0-2 record at 133-pounds for the Huskies and Shane Tappe was also 0-2 at 141-pounds. At 157-pounds, Eric O'Brien marked a 0-2 record and Nate Schut was 0-2 at 165-pounds, with Schut's second loss coming against Minnesota's Phil Meinart by a 3-2 tally. At 174-pounds, Brian Hanlon charted a 0-2 record, while Mikal Peterson went 1-2 at 197-pounds. Peterson gained a solid 6-3 win over Taylor Anderson of Regina in the first round of the wrestlebacks. To complete the day in Fargo, Brad Nowak marked a 2-2 record at heavyweight. He gained a 1:20 fall against Dante Gravina and then defeated Tony Ranieri of MSU, Moorhead by a 6-2 tally. In his first round match, Nowak lost a bout by fall against Minnesota's Justin Bronson at the 2:49 mark.

At the Willamson/Daktronics Open in Brookings, S.D. on Nov. 6, the Huskies' Brent Johnson was 0-2 at 133-pounds. At 141-pounds, a foursome of SCSU athletes competed. Shane Tappe gained a 2-2 record, which featured a 10-2 win over Josh Bauer of Mary in the wrestlebacks. Garrett Olejiniczak was 0-2 at 141, as were teammates Tom Messerli and Ben Fjoser. 

In action at 157-pounds, Adam Landherr posted a 3:15 fall against Iowa Central's Brandon Israels, before losing in the second round to NDSU's Adam Aho. In the wrestlebacks, Landherr posted a 5-0 win over Chad Tate of Iowa Central before losing 8-2 to andy Everson of SDSU.

At 165-pounds, Nate Schut gained a 11-0 win over Derrick Pomranky of Minnesota West, before losing to Isaac Copeland of Dana College. In the wrestlebacks, Schut posted a 2-1 win over Skip Toops of MSU, Moorhead before losing a tough 6-2 decision to Matt Englund of Northern State. Also at 165-pounds, Zach Thein gained a 5-4 win over Matt Mraz of Iowa Central, before losing a tough 9-3 decision to Mary's Ben Imdieke. In the wrestlebacks, Thein went on to defeat Erin Hume of Iowa Central and Dirk Verplank of Dana, which allowed him to gain a 3-1 win over Englund of MSU, Moorhead in the match for fifth place at 165-pounds. Also at 165-pounds, Sean Beere was 0-2.

At 184-pounds, SCSU's Lukas Pohlmeier charted a 2-2 record. His tournament included a 13-3 win over Kevin Drake of Iowa Central and a 7-1 win over SDSU's Levi Krehmeyer. Of note, no team scores were kept at either the Bison Open or the Williamson/Daktronics Open.
