Top-ranked Mocco holds off No. 2 Konrad 2-1 in overtime

November 22, 2004

Top-ranked heavyweight Steve Mocco of Oklahoma State held off second-ranked Cole Konrad, 2-1, in double overtime at the 39th annual Marines All-Star Classic on the campus of Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville. The exhibition event attempts to pit the top two ranked wrestlers at each weight class in a dual meet format.

Following a scoreless first period, Mocco took a 1-0 lead with an early escape in the second period. Konrad returned the favor with a third-period escape to send the match into overtime. Mocco took a 2-1 lead with an escape in the first overtime, and then rode out Konrad in the second overtime to hang on for the victory.

The two will meet again on Dec. 5 at the Sports Pavilion as the Golden Gophers host top-ranked Oklahoma State. Mocco has won 41 straight collegiate matches and won the 2003 NCAA Championship, while Konrad earned All-American honors in his first season of competition last year.
