Simpson Duals Results

Mankato, Minn. -- Minnesota State, as well as four individuals, takes home a perfect record at the Simpson Duals in Indianola, Iowa Saturday. MSU downed Central, Coe and Simpson College, losing only 28 team points in the three matches, while sophomore Jason Rhoten (Kasson, Minn), junior John Koons (Crosby, Minn.) and seniors Mike Engelmann (Spencer, Iowa) and Josh Janousek (Greenbush, Minn.) aided the Mavericks with perfect 3-0 records.

The Mavericks started their day with a 36-6 victory over Central. MSU lost matches at 125 and 133 before sweeping the rest of the weights. Junior Mathias Bitz (Bismarck, N.D.), Rhoten and Engelmann all pinned their opponents, adding a combined 18 points to the Mavericks score, while Koons added five more points for a technical fall at 5:50.

Despite winning only five matches, MSU continued it's success with a much closer 24-16 victory over Coe. The Mavericks recorded three major decisions, one each from juior Charlie Dawson (El Paso, Texas), Rhoten and Koons, evening out to 12 points. Minnesota State's other 12 points came when Janousek and Engelmann each pinned their opponents.

The Maverick's, for the second time of the day, gave up only two decisions, during their final match against host Simpson College. MSU recorded four major decisions and a fall in it's 31-6 victory. Freshman Joey Grasser (LeCenter, Minn.) picked up his first major decision of the season, while Koons picked up his second major of the day. Krinkie and Janousek added four team points each when they also recorded major decisions for the Mavericks. MSU's lone pin against the Storm came from Engelmann and took 3:00.

Engelmann spent less than the duration of one match on the mat while pinning his three opponents and moving his win column into double digits. Engelmann pinned Mark Trullinger of Central at :44, Ted Drees of Coe at 1:18 and Brett Christensen of Simpson at 3:00. Koons and Janousek also moved over the 10 wins mark Saturday, picking up their 8-9-10 victories.

Up next for the Mavericks is a home dual meet against the University of Mary, Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. in the Taylor Center. MSU will travel to St. Cloud State on Dec. 11 for an open tournament.
