Concordia update
December 7, 2004
UP NEXT: Concordia takes to the mat again this weekend traveling to St. Cloud to take part in the SCSU Invitational. The SCSU invite will showcase some of the best Div.II, Div.III and Junior College programs in the nation. The #1 division III Augsburg Auggies will be participating as well as the #9 ranked division II Mankato Mavericks. Other top teams will include: SCSU, Dickinson State, Jamestown, St. Olaf, Minnesota State-Moorhead, Northern State, Southwest Minnesota State, St. John's, Ridgewater C.C., Itasca C.C., Rochester C.C. and Minnesota West C.C.
SOMETHING NEW, SOMETHING OLD: Sophomore 125 lber. Kevin "Smokey" McBride provided some "New" for the Cobbers this weekend. Smokey wrestled the tournament of his career over the weekend. He pinned John Schermerhorn (2x State Champion Frazee, MN) from MSUM in the first round. He then followed up with the quickest pin of the tournament pinning a tough Div.I wrestler from the University of Minnesota in only :13 seconds. He then received a forfeit into the finals where he faced NAIA National Qualifier Mark Johnston. Smokey ended up losing but placed Johnston on his back in the closing period in what seemed like an obvious fall. The something "Old" came from the Concordia "Anchors" Lee Rahrlien, Dennis Kline and David Ahmed. Lee placed 3rd after losing to two-time undefeated National Champion Marcus Levesseur from Augsburg College. Lee wrestled Marcus tough, as he was the only wrestler that Levesseur did not pin in the tournament. David Ahmed finished in 4th place after wrestling some very veteran and skilled opponents. Dave showed a lot of determination and used his never quit attitude to pull out some close victories. Dave won three matches by less than two points. Dennis Kline the other Cobber captain finished in 6th place in what proved to be the deepest weight class at the tournament. The 197-pound bracket found itself loaded down with five All-Americans. Dennis lost twice to former Ridgewater All-American Jake Elgin. Dennis also lost to All-American Joe Cullen from Augsburg. In Dennis' other matches he won by fall in times of :20 and 5:12. He also defeated a different Augsburg wrestler 6-3 to make it into the placing round. Wes Graff, Zack Schumack, Mitch Gabrielson and Luke Reuss all turned in strong performances as well this weekend but fell short of placing.
LEADING THE PACK: Coach Clay Nagel in his first year as Head Coach has the Cobbers attacking the competition head on. The hard nosed aggressive wrestling people remember seeing from Coach Nagel's famed Frazee teams is beginning to turn heads at Concordia. After competing in the SCSU invite the Cobbers will take some time off and resume their quest for excellence at the Dickinson State Open January 8.
