HUSKIES TO HOST ANNUAL SCSU Invitational: St. Cloud State University's Halenbeck Hall will be the site of the 34th St. Cloud State Invitational wrestling tournament on Saturday, Dec. 11. This tournament will feature many of the nation's top NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NJCAA wrestling programs in the nation.
The tournament will begin at 9 a.m., and the admission cost will be $8 and $5 for spectators under the age of 18. Teams slated to participate in the tournament along with SCSU include Augsburg College, Concordia University-Moorhead, Dickinson State, Jamestown, St. Olaf, Minnesota State-Moorhead, Minnesota State-Mankato, Northern State, Southwest Minnesota State, St. John's, Ridgewater C.C., Itascha C.C., Rochester C.C. and Minnesota West C.C. LAST WEEK'S RESULTS: The St. Cloud State wrestling team competed at the 2004 Northern Iowa Open on Sunday, Dec. 5. This meet featured many of the nation's top NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III programs. In action at 133-pounds for SCSU, Brent Johnson posted a 0-2 record. At 141-pounds, Tom Messerli was 1-2, which included an 8-6 win over UI's Derek Coorough. SCSU's Matt Jensen also competed at 141-pounds and he was 0-2 at the tournament. At 149-pounds, Adam Minnette was 1-2 and teammate Eric O'Brien was 0-2 at UNI. Blake Christopherson was 0-2 at 157-pounds, and Natt Schutt was also 0-2 at 165-pounds. Sean Beere chalked up one win at 165-pounds for the Huskies on route to a 1-2 record.At 174-pounds, Mike Gritti and Brian Hanlon both notched 0-2 records, while 184-pounder Lucas Pohlmeier was 1-2 at UNI. To complete the meet, Mikal Peterson was 1-2 at 197-pounds and Brad Nowak was 0-2 at heavyweight.
TEAM NOTES: In 2003-04, SCSU's Derek Miller qualified for the NCAA DII national championsips...in 2004, SCSU placed 11th as a team at the always rugged St.Cloud State Invitational. Four-time defending SCSU Invitational champion North Dakota State will not be attending this season, since the Bison are now wrestling at the NCAA Division I level. NCAA Division III power Augsburg will be attendance, and the last team other than NDSU to win the SCSU title was Augsburg in 1999. SCSU has won 10 SCSU Invitational titles with the last title being claimed in 1987...did you know that 184-pounder Lukas Pohmeier spent last year on active duty with the Army in Italy.
SCSU COACHING STAFF: The Huskies are led this season by Steve Grimit (Western Illinois, 1987). Grimit is in his 12th season as head coach of the Huskies. Grimit has led the Huskies to a 62-79 overall/21-48 NCC record since 1993. In 2003, he led his wrestling squad to a ninth place finish at the NCAA Championships. Grimit joined the SCSU staff following four seasons at Valparaiso (IN) University. As the SCSU wrestling coach, Grimit has enjoyed success during the past eleven seasons. In 1995, Grimit guided SCSU's Gene Hanemann to an NCAA Division II national title at 158-pounds. In 1996 and 1997, Grimit coached Andy Reigstad to consecutive runner-up finishes at the NCAA meet in the 150-pound category. Grimit graduated from Western Illinois University in 1987 with a bachelor's degree in physical education. He received a master's degree in sport management/ athletic administration from WIU in 1988. Grimit and his wife Kim have two children, Nicole and James.
