MSU-Moorhead tough at SCSU Invite

Moorhead, MN -- MSU &endash; Moorhead brought another strong showing to the mat with a third place finish with 93.5 points, trailing only second place MSU - Mankato (119.5) and first place Augsburg College (145). MSU &endash; Moorhead also placed 7 out of 10 wrestlers, with two wrestlers reaching the finals, 157 Josh Jansen and 174 Eric Hageman.

At 157 pounds, Senior Josh Jansen started out the day with a major dec. over Lee Rahlein of Concordia and followed that with a 6-4 decision over Shawn Plumley of Southwest St. He then fell to two time defending national champion Marcus LeVesseur of Augsburg College in the finals.

At 174 pounds, Senior Eric Hageman opened up the day with two victories over higher seeded opponents. In his first match he pinned Mitch Mistic of Itasca in 2:18 and followed that with a pin in 6:06 of #1 seed Travis Birhanzl of Augsburg College in the semi's, before falling to Tim Johns of Southwest St. in the finals 10-1.

At 125 pounds, Junior Dave Burgard finished 5th with a record of 3-2, defeating Kevin McBride of Concordia 12-11 in the quarters who he coached when he coached at Fargo North.

At 133 pounds, Freshman Scot Ahlf went 1-2 on the day defeating Wes Graff of Concordia by fall at 4:31 in the opening round.

At 141 pounds, Junior Ben Keen finished 3rd with a record of 3-1. Falling to Brandon Girtz of Mankato in the semi's 4-3, then coming back to beat Corey Owen of Dickinson in the 3rd place match by fall at 6:03.

At 149 pounds, Junior Danny Meyer finished 5th with a record of 4-2 on the day. He defeated Chad Zubke of Itasca in the 5th place match by fall at 2:26.

At 165 pounds, Freshman Rockie Stavn finished 4th on the day with a record of 4-2. Rockie opened up the day with a loss to Matt Steffenson of Itasca 12-8, then fought his way back with 3 wins and avenged his loss to Steffenson in a 7-5 victory propelling him into the 3rd place match, before falling to Jeff Snegosky of St. John's in the 3rd place match 4-1.

At 184 pounds, Junior Tony Soderberg went 1-1 before having to Injury Default out of the tournament with an injured shoulder.

At 197 pounds, Junior Brandon Gruchow had a solid day finishing 2-2 for a 5th place finish for the Dragons. Gruchow defeated Scott Kaminski of Minnesota West by tech fall 23-8 at 6:34 in the third period.

At Hwt, Sophomore Jordan Vallie finished 1-2 on the day with an opening round pin over Jason Finley of St. John's.

The Dragons also had a strong showing in the Silver division with one individual champion, Shane Walton - 141, two runner-up finishes, Troy McFarland &endash; 125 and Skip Toops &endash; 165, and a 6th place finish by Eric Roseen &endash; 174.
