Mavericks fare well in Tournament of Champions

Reno Tournament of Champions results

Mankato, Minn. -- Minnesota State wrestlers headed to Reno, Nev. for the annual Tournament of Champions which features many Division I schools, including tournament champions and top ranked Oklahoma State University.

MSU, currently ranked #7 in the latest Division II poll, claimed 12th Sunday, seeing only three Mavericks place individually. Currently ranked #3 in the nation, sophomores Jason Rhoten (Kasson, Minn.) and Travis Krinkie (Blue Earth, Minn.) each earned a fifth place finish at 149 and 174 pounds respectively. Senior Josh Janousek (Greenbush, Minn.) took home sixth place for MSU at 197 pounds.

Rhoten took his first match of the day with a 15-0 technical fall, following that up with a 9-3 victory. Rhoten was then downed by Patrick Williams of Arizona State 7-3. Rhoten put together two consecutive wins including a 12-2 major decision and a 3-1 decision Jeff Silvia of Cal State Fullerton for fifth place.

Krinkie recieved a bye before winning a 10-2 major decision facing him against Shane Webster from the University of Oregon. Krinkie lost an 11-6 decision to Webster. Krinkie continued his day with a 7-3 decision over Ricky Renzi of Arizona State, finally facing off and defeating David Rivera of Embry Riddle, 3-2 for fifth place.

Janousek, currently ranked #5 in Division II, placed sixth for the Mavericks. Janousek recieved a bye before losing a 2-1 decision to Ryan Bader from Arizona State. Janousek went on to win four straight matches, scoring eight points in each match including an 8-3 decision over Jaime Hernandez of Embry Riddle.

Sophomore Brandon Girtz (Forest Lake, Minn.) picked up his team best, 20th win this weekend with a 9-3 decision over Jordan Brock from Boise State University.

The Mavericks will have the holiday's off, continuing action on Jan. 6 with a dual at Northern State in Aberdeen S.D. MSU will begin NCC action with a dual on Jan. 14 at St.Cloud State.
