NDSU sweeps three at NC State Duals

RALEIGH, N.C.--The magic number was 23 for North Dakota State at the NC State Duals on Saturday.
NDSU heavyweight Tim Kraemer recorded a takedown with 23 seconds remaining to register a 3-2 decision over Duke's Andrew Herbert and lift the Bison to an 18-12 victory over the Blue Devils in the third round of the NC State Duals, held at Reynolds Coliseum.
The victory extended NDSU's dual-match winning streak to 23 matches and gave Kraemer his 23rd win of the season.
The Bison, who have not lost since February 2003, defeated Appalachian State 34-3 in the opening match of the day and then won at the wire on last-minute points by Kraemer again in the heavyweight bout to defeat NC State 19-13 in the second round.
NDSU senior Nick Magee picked up his 50th career victory with a pin of Appalachian State's Terrell Williams at 133-pounds to highlight an opening round 34-3 dismantling of the Mountaineers. Bison junior Dustin Benz picked up a major decision over Rocky Richey at 197-pounds as NDSU won all but one of the bouts in the contest.
In the second round, the Bison trailed NC State 13-10 heading into the final three matches. NDSU's Matt Hermann decisioned the Wolfpack's Jeremy Colbert 7-4 at 184 to tie the score at 13. Then Benz followed with a 2-0 victory over NC State's Zach Garren at 197 to put the Bison up 16-13 heading into the heavyweight contest. Kraemer's late heroics secured a 5-3 decision over NC State's Jainor Palma and kept NDSU's winning streak in tact at 22 straight.
The Bison faced another Atlantic Coast Conference foe in Duke in the final round. Redshirt freshman Mike Meger started the scoring for NDSU at 125-pounds with a 5-2 decision over the Blue Devils' Kellon McKeon NDSU would drop the next three matches, but bounced back with three straight wins of their own. Senior Collin Kelly defeated Duke's Adam Lesser 6-2 at 157-pounds and freshman Andy Pickar edged Steve Smith 6-2 at 165-pounds. Junior Adam Dahlstrom's 7-5 victory over Levi Craig would break a 9-9 tie and put the Bison up 12-9.
But the Blue Devils answered with a 6-3 victory by Frank Cornely at 184-pounds over Hermann. At 197, Benz stayed undefeated on the day with a 10-4 decision over Mark Thompson. The match again came down to the heavyweight bout. Kraemer's late takedown with 23 seconds left against Herbert gave the junior his 23 win of the season and the Bison its 23 straight dual victory.
NDSU and Duke will tangle again on Tuesday, January 11 in Durham, N.C., with the opening bout scheduled for 6 p.m. (EST) at Brodie Gym. The Bison then head to Hampton, Va. to compete in the Virginia Duals to be held on January 14-15.
