Mavericks remain unbeaten in conference action

Mankato, MN, Minnesota State rolled over the Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State Thursday night 31-6 in front of nearly 300 fans at Bresnan Arena in the Taylor Center of Minnesota State University.
The night began at 174 pounds where #3 ranked Travis Krinkie (Blue Earth, Minn.) took a 15-9 decision over Tim Johns. The Mavericks continued when #3 junior John Koons (Crosby, Minn.) earned a 10-0 major decision, his fifth shutout in his last six matches, over Ryan Gosch.
At 197 pounds, #5 senior Josh Janousek (Greenbush, Minn.) continued the Mavericks sucess as he picked up a 8-6 decision over Joel Wipperfurth, before #6 senior heavyweight Mike Engelmann (Spencer, Iowa) tagged his 17th fall of the season at 3:30, bringing the team score to 16-0 in favor of MSU.
Sophomore #5 Nick Smith (Yankton, S.D.) picked up a fall at 5:35, his first pin in a Maverick singlet. At 133 pounds, freshman Efrain Ayala (Grand Island, Neb.) earned a 10-4 decision over Kurt Smith, bringing the team score to 25-0, MSU.
MSU lost two consecutive decisions at 141 and 149, rebounding at 157 when #7 junior Math Bitz (Bismarck, N.D.) recorded a 4-2 decision over Shawn Plumley. The match concluded with a 7-0 decision by sophomore Jeremiah Nowak (Edgar, Wis.).
The Mavericks return to action tomorrow night with a dual in Souix Falls, S.D. against North Central Conference foe and #2 ranked Augustana. MSU returns to home action Feb. 11 with a dual against Wisconsin-Parkside.
