Sioux Falls, S.D. -- The fifth-ranked Minnesota State Mavericks picked up the 500th dual victory in program history in exciting fashion as they upset second ranked Augustana (9-2, 2-1 NCC) 20-14 in front of 1,143 fans in the Elmen Center on the campus of Augustana College.
The dual opened at a 125 pounds, pitting fifth-ranked Nick Smith (Yankton, S.D.) against Augustana's second-ranked Aaron Graumann. Sophomore 141-pounder Brandon Girtz (Forest Lake, Minn.) picked up a 9-4 decision over seventh-ranked Andre Vander Velde, earning Girtz his team-high 25th victory of the season against eight losses. Augustana sent Ryan King, the top-ranked 141-pounder in the nation, against junior TOny Hanson (New Hampton, Iowa), and King prevailed with a 23-9 major decision victory, one of only two wins for the Vikings on the night via bonus points.
Seventh-ranked junior Mathias Bitz (Bismark, N.D.) earned a 5-4 victory #6 Austin Scarset, to give the Mavericks a 9-7 advantage after five matches, a lead in which they would not relinquish the rest of the dual. The winning ways continued for MSU as sophomore Jermiah Nowak earned a 9-4 victory at 165 pounds and fourth-ranked Travis Krinkie (Blue Earth, Minn.) earned a 11-3 major decision at 174 pounds to cushion the Maverick lead, giving MSU a 16-7 advantage.
In a battle of #1 vs. #3, top-ranked Tom Meester defeated junior John Koons (Crosby, Minn.) 18-5 before second-ranked Tim Boldt upended senior Josh Janousek (Greenbush, Minn.) at 197 pounds. The Mavericks, leading 16-14 going into the final match of the evening used an 11-2 decision from sixth-ranked senior heavyweight Mike Englemann (Spencer, Iowa) to conclude the dual, giving Minnesota State the 20-14 advantage.
The Mavericks (13-2, 4-0 NCC) continue action Friday, Feb. 5, when they travel Moorhead, Minn., to take on MSU-Moorhead, in a North Central Conference clash.
