Upper Iowa overpowers Southwest Minnesota State 35-6

Upper Iowa University won eight of 10 matches in defeating Southwest Minnesota State 35-6 Wednesday night in Dorman Gymnasium in Fayette, Iowa. After dropping the first match, the Peacocks won seven straight to improve to 8-2 in dual meets this season.
Kyle Burkle, Brandon Heying and Matt Norton picked up consecutive wins by fall for the Peacocks. Burkle pinned Aldon Stuchen at the 5:34 mark at 149 pounds and Heying pinned Keith Robinson in 2:38 at 157 pounds. Norton followed with a win over Greg Frank at 4:30 at 165 pounds.
Southwest Minnesota State (1-8) took an early 3-0 lead as Brice Whitacre picked up a 4-2 overtime decision over UIU's Bruce Bearman at 125 pounds. The Peacocks tied the dual at 3-3 as Nathan Naumann earned a 6-3 win at 133 pounds. John Gamble's 12-3 major decision win at 141 pounds propelled the Peacocks to a 7-3 lead.
Burkle, Heying and Norton followed with their back-to-back-to-back pinfall wins to increase the Upper Iowa advantage to 25-3. Brady Hakeman (4-1 decision at 174 pounds) and Phil Bruschuk (20-7 major decision at 184 pounds) won to give UIU seven straight match wins and a 32-3 lead in the dual.
Joel Wipperfurth ended the Peacock streak with a 6-2 win over Dan Goodson at 197 pounds. UIU senior Steve Farrell picked up a 5-2 win at heavyweight in his final home match for the Peacocks.
The Peacocks compete at the Central Missouri State Dual Jamboree Saturday, Feb. 12, beginning at 10 a.m.
