Northern State defeats Mustangs at home in close match

Marshall, Minn: For the second straight match the Southwest Minnesota State University wrestling team lost a close, tight match as they fell to Northern State University 25-17. The loss drops the Mustangs' record to 1-10 and 0-3 in North Central Conference competition.
Southwest took the first match of the evening as Brice Whitacre (So., Estherville, Iowa) wrestled unopposed at 125, putting SMSU up 6-0. Brandon Hamen put NSU on the board when he defeated freshman Kurt Smith (Brookings, S.D.) at 133 by a score of 5-3. After Jeff Cooley (Fr., Westbrook, Minn.) picked up an impressive 13-4 win at 141, the Mustangs dropped the next three matches as they fell behind 18-10. At 174 Tim Johns (Jr., Harrisburg, S.D.) rebounded for the Mustangs and picked up a win by defeating Matt Englund by a score of 11-2 to pull Southwest to within four at 18-14. After Johns' win, SMSU lost the next two matches at 184 and 197. Junior Richard Roesler (Mora, Minn.) ended the night with a 11-6 win at heavyweight as he scored four takedowns in the match.
Southwest Minnesota State will be back on the road this weekend when they travel to Warrensburg, Mo. The Mustangs will take in part in the Central Missouri State Invite which is an all day event.
