Northern Iowa overpowers NDSU 31-12;
Panthers snap Bison's consecutive home winning streak
February 10, 2005
FARGO, N.D.--Northern Iowa jumped out to a 21-0 lead over North Dakota State after five matches, thanks in large part to pins by Adam Baumgartner at 125 pounds and C.J. Ettelson at 141 pounds, and cruised to a 31-12 victory over the Bison on Thursday, Feb. 10 at the Bison Sports Arena.
A season-high 1,015 fans watched as the thirteenth-ranked Panthers snapped NDSU's 20-match home winning streak. The Bison hadn't lost at the BSA since the 2000-01 season when Division III power Augsburg defeated NDSU, 19-12.
The Bison fell to 7-3 on the season. UNI improved its record to 6-7.
Baumgartner, filling in for regular 125 pound starter Chris Helgeson tied up Bison freshman Mike Meger late in the first period and secured a pin with just nine-seconds remaining in the stanza to put the Panthers out in front 6-0.
NDSU's Nick Magee fell behind UNI's Ryan Osgood 4-0 after two periods in their matchup at 133. After choosing neutral to start the third, Magee scored two takedowns in the third period, but Osgood's two escapes proved to be the difference in a 6-4 win.
UNI got another big pin at 141 pounds when freshman C.J. Ettelson used a takedown at the 1:33 mark of the first period and immediately sent NDSU senior Lucas Christianson to his back and got the pin at 1:40. Ettelson's fall gave the Panthers an early 15-0 lead in the contest.
NDSU's Zach Stevens battled sixth-ranked Jeff Harrison at 149 pounds and fell behind 4-0 after one period with Harrison scoring a takedown and 2-point nearfall. Harrison used another takedown in the third and riding time (1:43) to out distance Stevens 8-1 and build UNI's lead to 18-0.
Senior co-captain Collin Kelly cut Chris Bitetto's lead to 6-3 after two periods with a nifty takedown in their 157 pound matchup, but Bitetto held off Kelly's charge in the third with a takedown of his own and riding time advantage to earn a 9-4 decision.
Down 21-0, the Bison got on the scoreboard when freshman Andy Pickar put UNI's Mark Manchio in a cradle and pinned Manchio at 165 pounds with just 30-seconds left in the first period. Pickar's sixth pin and 21st win of the season cut the deficit to 21-6. Manchio was filling in for Panther regular Nick Baima who didn't make the trip due to a hand injury.
Ninth-ranked Eric Hauan answered Pickar's six points with a pin over NDSU's Adam Dahlstrom at 174 pounds. Hauan led 5-0 after one period and caught Dahlstrom in the second period with a pinfall at 4:25 to earn his 25th win (25-6) of the season. Dahlstrom fell to 19-10.
Matt Hermann gave NDSU its second win of the contest by outscoring Dan Dunning 7-4 at 184 pounds. Hermann avenged an earlier loss to Dunning (8-6) suffered at the Kaufman-Brand Open. The sophomore entered the third period tied 2-2 with Dunning, but came up with two takedowns and riding time (1:22) in the third stanza to earn a three-point decision.
Sixth-ranked Sean Stender extended UNI's lead to 31-9 with a 10-2 major decision over NDSU's Dustin Benz at 197 pounds.
NDSU heavyweight Tim Kraemer ended the night on a good note for the Bison with a 5-3 decision over Jeff Knoll. The two grappled to a 2-2 tie after one. Knoll went up 3-2 after an escape to start the second, but Kraemer's executed low single leg takedown at the 0:49 mark proved to be the difference maker. He added an escape in the third period to hold on for his team-leading 27th win of the season.
Northern Iowa has now won five straight duals against North Dakota State.
Next action for NDSU will be Friday, Feb. 18, when the Bison travel to Greeley, Colo. for two duals. First, the Bison will take on Utah Valley State at 2 p.m., in Greeley, followed by a 7 p.m. dual with host Northern Colorado.
