Wisconsin-Parkside no match for #2 Minnesota State

Mankato, Minn. -- In its first action as the #2 ranked team in the nation, the Minnesota State wrestling squad had virtually no problems handing #12 ranked Wisconsin-Parkside a 37-3 defeat. The Mavericks won nine of 10 matches on the evening.
The dual started with the 125-pounders. Freshman Joey Grasser (LeCenter, Minn.) got the Mavericks onslaught underway with a 7-6 decision over Craig DeGreef. Efrain Ayala followed with a decision over Matt Lentz 11-7 which gave MSU a quick 6-0 lead. In the 141 pound match, #8 Brandon Girtz (Forest Lake, Minn.) collected a 10-6 decision over Scott Schramm.
149-pounder and #3 Jason Rhoten (Kasson, Minn.) shut out Matt Fiordirosa 4-0 and gave the Mavericks a 12-0 lead. Sophomore Jeremiah Nowak (Edgar, Wis.) was the only Mavericks to lose a match on the evening. Nowak was defeated by A.J. Morgan 3-2 and gave the Rangers their only team points of the night.
In the 174-pound match, #4 Travis Krinkie (Blue Earth, Minn.) picked up the win by technical fall over Kyle Becker 20-2 at 5:50 and gave the Mavericks a 23-3 lead. #3 John Koons (Crosby, Minn.) also collected a win by technical fall 17-0 over Ben Thiem at 3:12 in the 184-pound match match.
In the final match of the evening, 197-pounder and #6 Josh Janousek (Greenbush, Minn.) collected a 4-1 decision over John Goral. Senior heavyweight Mike Engelmann (Spencer, Iowa) and 157-pounder Mathias Bitz (Bismarck, N.D.) both received wins by forfeit.
The Mavericks will be back in action tomorrow when they will host top-ranked Nebraska-Omaha. The dual is slated to begin at 7 p.m. in Bresnan Arena.
