South Dakota State closes home wrestling season

BROOKINGS, SD - South Dakota State closed its home wrestling season with a pair of victories Tuesday night.
The Jacks won seven matches as they defeated Dakota Wesleyan 28-18, then claimed six weights in a 23-15 victory over Northern State.
That puts SDSU at 9-6 for the season. The Jacks will return to action Friday when they face Millersville of Pennsylvania on a trip which also includes a Sunday dual at American University in Washington, D.C.
FIRST MATCH
South Dakota State overcame a forfeit and two pins to defeat Dakota Wesleyan.
DWU started things with a second period pin by Scott Halouska at 184, and record a fall at 125 by Jared Digmann to go with a forfeit at 165.
The Jacks tied the match at 6-6 on decisions by Cody Nehl and Scott Revier. Nehl had a takedown and two-point near fall late in the second period to take a 6-2 lead over Steven Wood and won 6-3. Revier and DWU's Andrew Stensrud were tied at three going into the third period of the heavyweight match. Stensrud got an escape to lead 4-3, then Revier scored a takedown with 1:06 left and rode out the period for a 5-4 decision.
After Digmann's pin at 125, DWU was open at 133 again tying the match, this time at 12.
The Jacks won the next three weights, including a pin by Brad Gregory at 141, a 7-4 decision by Chad Herrboldt at 149 and an overtime decision by Alex Watkins at 157. Watkins and DWU's Herbie Fitzgerald were 2-2 at the end of regulation, but Watkins scored a takedown and three-point near fall in the overtime period.
SDSU forfeited at 165 before Travis Gottschalk ended the night with a 10-1 major decision at 174.
With the victory, SDSU improved to 8-6. DWU is 1-10 in duals.
SECOND MATCH
SDSU claimed decisions in a couple of early key matches and built a 23-6 lead before Northern won the last three weights.
Northern took a 3-0 lead when Todd Naasz won an overtime decision against Levi Krehmeyer at 184, but the Jacks won a 197 and heavyweight to get the lead. At 184, Cody Nehl used an escape, takedown and three-point near fall in the third period along with 1:19 riding time advantage for a major decision over Cory Wellnitz.
At heavyweight, Scott Revier had an escape and two takedowns in the second period as he won 8-5 over Jess Hockley.
After SDSU picked up a forfeit at 125 for a 13-3 lead, Chris Werth won a 2-1 overtime decision at 133 against Brandon Haman in another key match. Each wrestler had an escape in regulation before Werth won it on a stalling point in overtime.
