Bears turn tables on Bison

February 18, 2005

GREELEY, Colo.--Northern Colorado won six of ten matches and avenged a 31-3 loss to North Dakota State (8-4) back on January 22, by defeating the Bison 19-15 in Greeley, Colo. A crowd of 485 was on hand at the Butler-Hancock Sports Pavilion to witness UNC's first win against NDSU since the 1979-80 season.

Northern Colorado head coach Jack Maughan scored his first ever victory over his father, NDSU head-man Bucky Maughan. The younger Maughan is now 1-17-1 all-time against his mentor.

The Bears (6-6) got off to a fast start when Blayze Bahe scored a come-from-behind victory over NDSU's Mike Meger at 125 pounds. Meger led 6-4 after two periods and chose down to start the third. Bahe used a three-point nearfall in the final stanza to escape with a one-point win.

NDSU's Nick Magee tied the dual up at 3-3 with an 8-6 decision over UNC's Kyle Kaiser at 133 pounds.

At 141 pounds, UNC's Kenny Hashimoto got the best of NDSU's Lucas Christianson for the second time this year. Hashimoto scored a 4-1 victory to give the Bears a 6-3 lead in the dual.

The Bears stretched the lead to 9-3 after Nathan Gerrard's 6-2 decision over NDSU's Zach Stevens at 149 pounds and pushed their lead to nine when Mikell Surber handed NDSU's Collin Kelly an 11-8 setback at 157 pounds.

Kelly led 7-4 after two periods, but Surber scored two takedowns in the final minute to tie the score at 8-8 and earned a three-point nearfall as time expired to escape with a victory.

NDSU's Andy Pickar got the Herd back on track in a hurry with his seventh pin of the season at 165 pounds. Pickar was leading UNC's Johnny White 14-5 in the third when he secured the pin and brought the Bison within three at 12-9.

UNC's Shawn Hart defeated NDSU's Adam Dahlstrom 7-4 at 174 pounds. Dahlstrom led 4-3 after two stanzas, but Hart scored a takedown and added a two-point nearfall in the third period.

At 184 pounds, NDSU's Matt Hermann cut UNC's dual lead to 15-12 with a 7-5 decision over Cole Allison. Hermann's 20th win of the season came via three takedowns and riding time advantage.

The Bears' Tanner Linsacum ended NDSU's chances at a comeback with a 13-5 major decision over Dustin Benz at 197 pounds. His four team points gave UNC a 19-12 edge with only one match remaining.

At heavyweight, Tim Kraemer improved his record to 29-7 on the season with a 6-5 win over Sam Safken. Kraemer scored a takedown with just 1:25 left on the clock in the third period and held off Safken's efforts to secure the win.

Northern Colorado's Bahe, Gerrard, Surber, Hart and Linsacum all avenged earlier losses from the dual back on Jan. 22.

The Bison will end their Rocky Mountain swing with a dual tomorrow at Wyoming. The opening bout is scheduled for 7 p.m. MT in Laramie, Wyo.
