Kraemer's clutch overtime win lifts NDSU to 22-21 thriller over Wyoming
February 19, 2005
LARAMIE, Wyo.--Trailing 21-19 heading into the final match of the night, North Dakota State's hope of a come-from-behind win over Wyoming rested on the shoulders of heavyweight Tim Kraemer. The junior scored an 11-9 overtime decision against the Cowboys' Dusty Hoffschneider to give NDSU a 22-21 win before 356 fans at the MultiPurpose Gymnasium.
The Bison (9-4) trailed Wyoming 21-13 after the 184 pound match. After NDSU's Dustin Benz received a forfeit at 197 pounds to cut the Cowboy lead to 21-19, the stage was set at heavyweight.
Kraemer built an early 2-1 lead after the first period and led Hoffschneider, an NCAA Qualifier and West Regional Champion at heavyweight last season, by as much 8-4 late in the match. But Hoffschneider secured a takedown with 18-seconds left in regulation to force overtime.
Kraemer wasted little time in attacking in overtime, scoring a takedown just 15-seconds in to give him his 30th win of the season and give the Bison their 9th dual win on the year.
The Cowboys (5-9) struck first in the match when Bryce Leonhardt scored a 10-4 victory over NDSU's Mike Meger at 125 pounds.
NDSU's Nick Magee dominated Wyoming's Tyson Shatto at 133 pounds, scoring a 12-0 major decision to put the Bison in front 4-3.
At 141 pounds, NDSU's Lucas Christianson gave up an early takedown to Wyoming's Garrett Desmond, then scored nine unanswered to win 9-2.
NDSU's Zach Stevens was leading his match 7-6 at 149 pounds in the third period when he went down with an injury default to Kyle Dye to put the Cowboys back in front 9-7.
Wyoming stretched the lead to eight when Dan Clum pinned the Bison's Collin Kelly in the first period in their 157 pound match and pushed it to 11 when Gary Dack decisioned NDSU's Andy Pickar for the second time this season, 7-2 at 165.
NDSU's Adam Dahlstrom put the Bison back on course in a big way with a first period pin of Clint Stout (1:56). The Bison still trailed 18-13.
At 184 pounds, NDSU's Matt Hermann fell 5-3 to Wyoming's Samuel Wendland to put the Bison down eight heading into Benz's forfeit at 197 pounds.
The Bison will end the 2004-05 season with a home dual on Friday, Feb. 25 against South Dakota State. NDSU will be seeking its 25th double-digit win season. The opening dual is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the Bison Sports Arena.
