Sun, 20 Feb, 2005
MADISON, Wis. - The 11th-ranked Wisconsin wrestling team defeated No. 18 Northwestern, 19-18, Sunday afternoon in Evanston, Ill. The Badgers finish the regular season with an overall record of 11-3-2 (4-3-1 Big Ten), while Northwestern drops to 9-6 (2-6 Big Ten).
The dual came down to the last match of the day as junior tri-captain Ryan Flaherty won a 6-4 overtime decision over 14th-ranked Matt Delguyd to give Wisconsin the 19-18 edge. The Badgers' dramatic win came as Flaherty was able score a late takedown in the OT period to secure the match.
"Ryan Flaherty pulled it out for us. He left it all on the mat and should be proud," said assistant head coach Bart Chelesvig. "The team is real excited to get the win and we can't wait to get back to Iowa City for the Big Ten Championships."
Before Flaherty's bout, Wisconsin had only won four of the nine matches. At 133 pounds, Arvada, Colo., native, Tom Clum got the Badgers their first team points with a 17-6 major decision victory over NU's Dan Quintela. Two matches later, freshman Craig Henning earned his third technical fall victory of season taking down Jimmy Kim by a 16-0 margin.
At 165, redshirt freshman Jake Donar took his four Big Ten dual win by earning a 10-2 major decision against Nick Hayes. At 184 pounds, senior Brady Reinke won again as he earned a 7-3 decision over 17th-ranked Mike Tamillow. Reinke finishes the regular season with a perfect 13-0 record.
The Badgers will now prepare for the Big Ten Championships, March 5-6, hosted by Iowa.
