Augsburg claims title at SCSU Invitational

Girtz Named Most Outstanding Wrestler

Augsburg College claimed its 11th team title in the 34-year history of the St. Cloud State University Wrestling Invitational held Saturday at Halenbeck Hall. Augsburg tallied 145.0 points in team scoring in the 14-team field. Minnesota State University, Mankato finished second with 119.5 points. A young SCSU team placed 13th overall.

Brandon Girtz, the number two seed at 141 pounds was voted the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament. Girtz defeated the number one seed and defending champion Jamal Tidwell of Augsburg College, 5-1 in the championship match.

Augsburg's Mark Matzek repeated as champion at 133 pounds as did teammate Marcus Levesseur at 157 pounds. Matzek defeated Kurt Smith of Southwest Minnesota State University, 5-0. Levesseur beat Josh Jansen of Minnesota State-Moorhead with a fall at :18 seconds. Augsburg advanced eight wrestlers to the championship match and won four individual titles. Ryan Valek at 165 and Brad Tupa at 184 were also winners for Augsburg.

Minnesota State, Mankato had five wrestlers in championship matches and came away with wins at 141 by Brandon Girtz, 149 by Jason Rhoten, 197 by Josh Janousek, and at Heavyweight by Mike Englemann.

St. Cloud State junior Nate Schut (Monticello), 165 pounds, went 2-2 in the tournament opening with a 7-3 decision over David Ahmed of Concordia. He lost a 3-1 decision to Matt Steffenson of Itasca College, defeated Luke Switzer of Jamestown College by Fall at 2:01 and then lost of Jeff Snegosky of St. John's by a 3-2 decision.
