March 18, 2006

Sophomore Mack Reiter finished in fourth place at 133 pounds at the NCAA Championships on Saturday morning in Oklahoma City, Okla. He also finished in fourth as a freshman a year ago. Reiter finished the season with a 32-6 record.

The tournament concludes tonight at the Ford Center. Minnesota has three finalists, including true freshman Dustin Schlatter at 149, sophomore Roger Kish at 184 and junior Cole Konrad at heavyweight. Tonight’s session begins at 6:30 p.m. Central and can be seen live on ESPN.

Reiter advanced to the third-place match with his first win in four tries against Oklahoma State’s Nathan Morgan. Reiter jumped ahead 2-0 with a first-period takedown, but Morgan tied the match with a reversal. Tied at four, Reiter took the lead for good with a takedown 23 seconds into the final period. Morgan cut the lead to 6-5 with an escape, but was unable to score on Reiter and fell by the 6-5 decision. Morgan was seeded second in the tournament.

In the third-place match, Reiter was defeated by top-seeded Shawn Bunch of Edinboro by an 8-2 decision. Leading 2-0 entering the second period, Bunch extended the lead to 5-1 with an escape and takedown. Bunch added a third-period takedown and finished with over two minutes in riding time. It was Bunch’s third career win against Reiter.
