Adams, Mooney win individual crowns at Warren Williamson/Daktronics Open

BROOKINGS, S.D.-- Two Bison wrestlers won individual championships and two others took home runner-up honors to open up the 2005-06 season at the Warren Williamson/Daktronics Open in Brookings, S.D. on Saturday, November 5.

Redshirt freshman Gabriel Mooney (Greenbush, Minn.) went 4-0 at 149 pounds winning four very close decisions that included a 3-2 victory over Willy Mekeel of Iowa Central in the finals.

Ryan Adams (Coon Rapids, Minn.) wrestled unattached for the Bison going 5-0 for the tournament at 141 pounds. The true freshman pinned Torey Seminara in his first ever collegiate match in just 47 seconds.

A couple of other Bison wrestlers also reached the finals. Sophomore Eric Sanders (Wabasha, Minn.) placed second at 133 pounds. Sanders, who redshirted last year, went 4-1 for the tournament losing to Tony Valdez of Iowa Central 4-2 in the finals.

Jacob Bryce (Glenwood, Minn.) also finished second. The redshirt freshman went 3-1 in the 197-pound bracket. Bryce's only loss of the day came in the finals where he was defeated by unattached wrestler Jacob Marrs 3-1.

Sophomore Matt Wetterling (Willmar, Minn.) placed fifth at 184 pounds going 3-2 with one of those victories coming by pin. Redshirt freshman Mike Quamme (Dundas, Minn.) took home fourth at 165 pounds going 2-2 for the tournament. One of those victories came in the second round by pin over Ben Caven-Johnson in just 1:07 of the first period.

20 wrestlers competed overall for North Dakota State which featured over 200 wrestlers from over 20 schools. 14 of the 20 wrestlers were able to pick up at least one victory at the event.

Up next for the NDSU wrestlers is the annual Bison Open on Saturday, November 12 at the Bison Sports Arena. Action starts at 10 a.m.
